My wife CM and I live on the island of Borneo. We were married in 1983 and started planning for children immediately. Fourteen years of baby chase resulted in the birth of our daughter in December 1988 and our son, nine long years later, in November 1997. The journey had not been easy.....

Two successive ectopic pregnancies experienced by CM in 1984 and 1985 on the left and right fallopian tubes respectively rendered both tubes functionless. Our dreams were shattered when doctors told us that CM and I would never be able to conceive naturally. At that time we heard about IVF and it was such a novel idea - at least here in Borneo where IVF babies born in this part of the world are virtually unheard of. We were told by doctors here that the success rate for IVF was extremely poor and that the best infertility clinics, at that time, were far away overseas. Logistically, it would be very difficult. Furthermore, we were also warned that the treatment was extremely expensive. Undeterred, we found the opportunity to have children of our own all too irresistible - even if it meant we were going to go bust financially. In 14 years we had six IVF attempts, another (3rd) ectopic pregnancy along the way, but happily two live births. One unsuccessful attempt at a clinic in England in 1986, three attempts in Singapore which resulted in the birth of our daughter in December 1988 and two attempts at a newly opened clinic in Borneo which resulted in the birth of our son in November 1997. In IVF terms, I guess we have been extremely lucky. The pregnancy of both our children went to full term and both were born naturally. We are truly blessed, not once but twice. However, there were numerous instances where we wanted to quit throughout the 14 years of baby chase. I'm glad we did not.
