A Bumpy Road to IVF success

After 8 years of dating my now husband, we decided to jump into marital bliss. We decided to grow our family after three years of a wonderful marriage. Things never progressed on their own beyond that. After 1 and 1/2 years of trying and doing some simple medical work ups, we had our first appointment with an infertility specialist. It was at this time, my hubby decided to see his doctor and get that thorough check up he had kept putting off. One of his tests revealed devastating news. He had cancer. Distraught and planning for his surgery, we put off the post coital test that had been slated to be the next test for me. Thankfully, the surgery removed the cancer in an early stage and we were relieved to go back to the infertility work up. Lo and behold my period never came-- I was pregnant!! A sonogram done later revealed I was having twins!! We couldn't have been more joyful, but alas this was another devastation for us as I miscarried them at 7 and 1/2 weeks. We felt God had sent us on such a rollercoaster, we put off the work up for about 6 months. When resumed the postcoital test was the only abnormality found-- my "hostile" cervical mucus destroys sperm. After several IUI's and one try of a vaginal test tube pseudo-IVF without success, we decided to try IVF before my insurance was to stop IF coverage. July of '98 was my retrieval. I had hyperstimulation, so 11 of the 20 eggs removed were fertilized and frozen. Scheduling delays made me wait until 11/98 for my FET of 3 thawed and surviving embryos. Two weeks later it was revealed that I was pregnant with one baby! Now at 14+ weeks things are going well. I'm now 35 and planning ahead for the next thaw and transfer when I'll be a couple of months post partum! Through the transfer and waiting period I was fortunate enough to have the guidance and support of the email group of women founded by Brenda, the creator of this site. My thanks to her and all the wonderful women in the group. I hope my success with FET is encouraging to other women facing the same journey into motherhood.
