Estrogen That Comes From Where?
Premarin is the brand name of a conjugated estrogen formula that is marketed as a relief for the symptoms of menopause. (Gynecologists and cardiologists go back and forth on the benefits and risks of hormone supplementation after menopause, but that's a huge other kettle of fish to fry. If you're heading towards The Change and aren't sure what is right for you, make sure to do plenty of research and listen to your doctor.)
As the graphic above states, Premarin is derived from the urine of pregnant horses. (A surprising number of great things come from pee ... including FSH
Sadly there is a great deal of debate about Premarin in the U.S., and much of the controversy surrounds the care and treatment of the horses that are bred and kept for the purposes of extracting the estrogen from the horse urine. There are other alternative formulas of estrogen available, so be sure to talk with your doctor if you have reservations about this medication.
